Big Sister’s useful distinction is between looking at a desktop companion and clicking through her. The official description says transparent areas pass mouse clicks through, while enabling Lock extends that behavior to the entire character.

Without treating her visible outline as an empty part of the desktop, you can drag the character and resize her with the mouse wheel. Lock changes the job of that space: input goes through instead of being caught by the companion. The listing also offers an always-on-top toggle, so visibility and input interception are separate settings to inspect.

Hiding introduces a third distinction. According to the developer, hiding the character leaves an active animated wallpaper running. If you want a clear work area, decide whether the obstruction is the character, the scenery or the way mouse input is handled; one setting is not advertised as doing all three jobs.

That is a concrete reason to examine a desktop pet beyond its idle animation. The worthwhile test is whether you can keep the part you enjoy visible while still reaching the work underneath it.

Sources & context

Mouse pass-through, hiding and wallpaper behavior are developer descriptions. No Windows setup, multi-monitor placement, startup behavior or file playback was tested.

One mechanic, the decision it creates, and a little dry humor.
