A hangar in eXoSpace Combat Engineer does not have to mean accepting somebody else’s idea of a small spacecraft. The official description lets you design drones and deploy them in swarms from your ship’s hangars. The designer’s job extends to what leaves the carrier.

Construction is advertised as gridless, using snapping and rotation to join parts at different angles. The stated constraints include weapons, thrust, energy and armor. Designing a fleet’s small craft therefore belongs to the same engineering premise as designing its large one; the listing does not establish that a swarm can evade those constraints or tell us how its commands work.

The appealing decision is about the division of labor you want to build. What should the main vessel carry out directly, and what might you ask a drone design to contribute? If your favorite weapon in a construction game is another thing you get to construct, eXoSpace gives that preference a hangar.

Sources & context

Custom drones, hangars and gridless construction are explicit developer descriptions. No command behavior, drone autonomy, resource cost or optimal carrier design was verified.

One mechanic, the decision it creates, and a little dry humor.
