Feeding the cats is part of getting better tools to fish in Fish to Cats: Catch & Feed. The developer says feeding them unlocks fishing skills. A catch is therefore useful to the advertised progression as well as the island’s appetite.

The description identifies another unlock condition separately: catching legendary leviathans grants exclusive ultimate skills. It does not name a skill or a required feeding quantity, so ordinary fish should not be assigned a made-up ability and every catch should not be assumed to grant an upgrade.

The useful distinction is between gathering fish and what that gathering enables next. If the cats are the attraction, their care is advertised to connect back to fishing rather than sit entirely outside it. Look for that loop when considering the game: catch something, feed the island, then find out what the newly available fishing skill actually changes.
