THE EVIDENCE SO FAR

Energy moves through a spire network on fireflies. Visible movement suggests a useful way to inspect logistics, but readability at scale needs testing.

Swarmdustry uses fireflies to carry energy through a spire network. A power grid you can watch fly past. The question I'd bring to this one: can you read a bottleneck from the movement of the bugs?

The game

The official Steam listing describes a living factory in which specialized workers move resources. Fireflies deliver energy through a network of spires. The developer says they follow the path of least resistance, making the network’s arrangement relevant to delivery. The current catalogue identifies the game as Early Access; future development is not part of the evidence for this report.

What players report

We have not sampled individual Steam comments for this report, so we are not claiming a community consensus about how this mechanic feels in practice. The game file displays dated Steam statistics separately. Those counts can help describe audience response, but they do not explain the reasons behind it.

Our analysis

A power network usually disappears into lines, meters or an overlay. Moving carriers offer a different possibility: you might understand an imbalance by watching where the traffic goes. In our reading, the attraction is not simply that the grid is animated. It is that the animation could become information.

The useful test is whether movement remains readable when the factory grows. A busy route might reveal heavy demand, a poor connection or insufficient delivery capacity; watching bugs alone might not distinguish them. Good supporting tools would matter as much as the spectacle. The electricity has legs, or at least wings. That does not automatically make it a good accountant.

What remains untested

We have not measured delivery behavior, routing changes after moving a spire, or performance in a large factory. A future review should introduce a deliberate bottleneck, diagnose it using the available tools, and show whether the repair helps. Until then, a visible energy supply is a promising interface idea rather than proof that complex factories are easy to understand.

One mechanic, the decision it creates, and a little dry humor.
