Food in Exark is not only the amount you can afford to consume. The official description says it fuels buildings and that stockpiles increase their cycle speed. A reserve can therefore matter to the pace of the engine as well as its ability to keep running.

That makes a bare-sufficiency reading incomplete. Having fuel for the next cycle answers one question; the stockpile’s speed effect answers another. The source does not provide the curve, cap or consumption rates, so it cannot establish that hoarding is always better or identify an ideal reserve. It does give the player a reason to watch stored food alongside output.

The other resources have distinct advertised jobs. Production constructs buildings, Inspiration hires crew who improve them, and Gold can buy buildings or crew directly at dockside markets. Those alternatives place food inside a larger engine rather than making it the universal purchase currency. The useful design tension is between having more machinery and sustaining the conditions under which that machinery runs. A larger ark and a faster working ark need not be the same achievement.

Sources & context

The official description establishes food’s two roles but supplies no speed curve, stockpile cap or building-specific consumption rates. No optimal reserve or production strategy is claimed.

One mechanic, the decision it creates, and a little dry humor.
